Micheal was my mentor, my friend and work colleague over the past 18 years. I will miss him very much and truly hope that I am wrong in my beliefs and hope that he is in a better place.

We have a guest segment about Band In A Box from Bill Mecca who is a voice over Talent and Sax Player.

I do a couple of short segments, one on the use of Side Chains for Ducking and whatever the opposite of that is :-) and a segment on recording a blues track using a very basic Tascam HDD recorder with no effects or plugs other then those available in my guitar pedal and Phonic Mixer.

We also discuss what I learnt working in a Professional Studio called Flying Fox Studios in Wagga Wagga.

Hey Guys!

This is a filler show until the main show comes out within the next couple of days. I wanted to repost the limiting segment because in Episode 32 I accidentally left a mastering limiter on the master track which meant any subtleties in the sound were lost. I have also thrown in some samples of my own limiters that I have on my system. Let me know which you thinks sounds the best on the forum.

Ambience Plugin and Plugin Development

I have been talking to Magnus Jonsson this week with regards to his Ambience Reverb Plugin. I have heard nothing but good things about Magnus's plugins and was dissapointed to hear that because he does not have access to a Mac Intel there will not be a Universal Binary any time soon. But for the rest of you, you can download now and use it on Windows, Mac OSX and OS9 Power PCs in AU and VST formats so go get it and have a play and let me know what you think. Magnus's home page is Magnus' Plugins

Now if you all donate a couple of dollars to him maybe he can buy a Mac Mini and develop his plugins for The Mac Intel Platform!

I asked Magnus what is involved in Developing a plugin, here is his answer:

Andrew:
Just a general question from someone who is not a programmer, what is
involved in porting a program across to either a new platofrm or totally
different operating system? Is it a case of a different assembler with a few
code changes to allow for port calls etc and testing or does it involve
writing the whole thing from scratch again?

Magnus:

Changing the compiler, probably changing code slightly at places,
testing, possibly fixing bugs that get uncovered.

Andrew:
Also, where do you even start when it comes to writing plugins? Are there pre made libraries, is there standard code to handle audio etc?

Magnus:

Most plugins are written in in C++, so it's a good idea to get some basic
understanding of C++ first. After that, you'll probably want to get familiar with VST or AU software development kits. For the sound processing www.musicdsp.org can provide some pointers. Before you write a real plugin you may find it easier to write some programs that read, process and write raw audio files on disk. You can laso download source code for open source plugins and learn from them. These are just some ideas.

Hope this of help to any budding Plugin Developers out there!
